RO Prefilter Cartridge RFQ: SDI, Turbidity and Flow

Prepare an RO prefilter cartridge RFQ with measured SDI, turbidity, flow, retention evidence and housing details rather than a micron label alone.

high flow cartridge filter housing for industrial liquid filtration

An RO prefilter cartridge RFQ should describe the water reaching the filter, not only the membrane plant’s nominal capacity. Include measured water-quality information, flow conditions, the required retention basis and the installed housing. These inputs help separate a replacement consumable inquiry from a wider pretreatment problem.

For industrial options, review high flow filter cartridges and high flow filter housings. This guide prepares information for technical review; it does not guarantee a finished-water result, membrane life or a particular INCE cartridge’s suitability.

Separate the last safety filter from the pretreatment train

DuPont’s FilmTec technical manual, Revision 20 dated August 2026, describes cartridge filtration as a final safety stage rather than the main means of removing a high solids burden. Its cartridge section recommends a 5 µm absolute pore size, with different provisions for particular risks. This is FilmTec application guidance, not a universal INCE specification or an approval for any product marked “5 micron.”

Use the current requirements for the actual membrane and system. Ask the supplier to explain the offered rating and its evidence. A high-flow format changes the consumable and housing arrangement; the format name does not establish retention performance.

Report SDI and turbidity as separate measurements

The same manual treats turbidity and silt density index as distinct feedwater checks and recommends SDI15 below 3 to minimize fouling, while noting a guideline at 5. These are operating-context guidelines, not cartridge removal guarantees. Do not convert a turbidity reading into an SDI value or promise a target SDI from micron grade alone.

Information to send Record with the result Why the reviewer needs it
SDI result Test duration, sampling point, date and method Distinguishes the condition actually measured
Turbidity Value, units, sampling point and time Provides another view of the feedwater condition
Water source and treatment Current process sequence and recent changes Locates the cartridge within the plant
Filter differential pressure Flow and operating condition with each reading Makes pressure history interpretable
Used element observations Identified element and operating interval Supports investigation without assuming a cause

If the test used a shorter duration than 15 minutes, label it accurately rather than reporting it as SDI15. If no measurement is available, state “not measured.” Estimated or historical values should not be presented as current samples.

Define the hydraulic duty at the filter

Provide normal and maximum feed flow, temperature, available inlet conditions and the acceptable pressure-drop budget. Distinguish flow through the prefilter from permeate production. Ask the responsible RO designer to establish the relevant filter duty, including any startup or operating modes the proposal must accommodate.

For an existing Pall-style, Parker-style or 3M-style replacement, send the full current part number and housing reference. Nominal length alone does not identify a qualified replacement. Confirm the seal, end-cap interface, flow direction, materials and documented operating limits.

For vessel selection, compare the RO pretreatment cartridge housing checklist and confirm the cartridge-to-housing interface before ordering a matched assembly.

Request an evidence-based proposal

  • Exact offered cartridge model, media, grade and rating definition.
  • Relevant retention evidence, including test conditions and assembly scope.
  • Proposed element quantity and clean pressure-drop basis at the required flow.
  • Compatibility review for the actual water chemistry and chemical exposures.
  • Installation and change-out requirements from the equipment supplier.
  • Any missing water-quality or equipment inputs that prevent confirmation.

Use the efficiency-report review principles when organizing evidence, while recognizing that a bag and a cartridge are different products. Do not transfer a test result from one offered construction to another.

Agree what the qualification trial will decide

Identify sampling locations before and after the prefilter and the downstream acceptance criteria approved by the system designer. Record water quality, flow, temperature and pressure history together over a meaningful operating period. A clean initial reading alone does not establish service life.

If elements load unusually quickly, preserve the operating record and investigate upstream conditions with the responsible team. Replacing the filter more often or selecting a finer label is not, by itself, a diagnosis. Avoid promising a universal replacement interval without the plant evidence and equipment instructions.

Send an RO prefilter specification for review

Provide the latest water analysis, measured SDI and turbidity, treatment sequence, required filter feed flow, existing cartridge and housing details, observed change-out history and quantity. Ask INCE for a clearly identified proposed replacement and the evidence or trial still needed for approval.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 5 micron label prove that a cartridge meets the RO specification?

No. Confirm the rating definition, supporting evidence, mechanical interface and the current requirements of the actual membrane system.

Can a cartridge guarantee SDI15 below 3?

Do not assume that result from the micron label or high-flow format. Evaluate the feedwater, whole pretreatment train and an agreed qualification plan.

Should I quote permeate production as the prefilter flow?

Identify it as permeate production, not automatically as filter duty. Obtain the actual feed flow and operating cases that the prefilter must handle.
