Multilayer Stainless Steel Filter Mesh: Stack and OEM RFQ

A multilayer stainless steel filter element is not simp […]

A multilayer stainless steel filter element is not simply several identical screens placed together. In engineered laminates, layers can perform different functions: a fine filtration layer controls pore geometry, while coarser support and drainage layers provide stiffness and flow paths. Some assemblies are diffusion-bonded by sintering; others may be mechanically stacked, spot welded or edge welded. Procurement drawings must identify the construction and layer order instead of using the vague note “multilayer mesh.”

This OEM guide helps buyers prepare an RFQ for fabricated stainless steel filter mesh discs, cylinders and panels without assuming a universal stack design.

Define the media architecture

Haver & Boecker describes POROSTAR as multiple layers of precision-woven wire mesh permanently bonded by diffusion, with individual layers selected for filtration, flow and structural support. Its published families use different layer counts and architectures for different duties. That illustrates why a supplier needs the required function and operating load—not just a micron number.

For each layer, the drawing or layer schedule should state:

  • Function: filtration, protection, drainage or structural support
  • Alloy and, where required, material standard and certificate level
  • Weave type, mesh count or nominal aperture, and wire diameter
  • Orientation relative to the upstream side and flow direction
  • Overall laminate thickness and tolerance
  • Bonding method: sintered, welded, brazed or mechanically retained
  • Edge condition, sealing land and allowance for forming

Micron rating is not a complete drawing requirement

“10 micron,” “75 micron” or “250 micron” can describe different test bases. A woven square mesh has a geometric aperture determined by wire spacing, whereas Dutch weave and sintered porous structures may be characterized by another pore-size or retention method. Ask the supplier to state the test standard, challenge medium and whether the value is a nominal aperture, maximum pore size or filtration rating. For background, see the micron size versus mesh count guide.

Do not convert mesh count to microns without wire diameter and weave data. Do not assume that adding layers automatically creates a particular rating. The qualified laminate or assembly test must support the claimed performance.

Flow direction and layer order

The fine layer is not automatically installed upstream in every design. A protective coarse layer may face the incoming stream, while the filtration layer and downstream support are arranged behind it. Reverse-flow cleaning or hydraulic shocks may require a balanced or perforated support. Mark the intended upstream face on the drawing and on the finished component when orientation matters.

For an element that will be backwashed, disclose forward and reverse differential pressure, cycle frequency and cleaning method. Haver’s published product variants show that laminate architecture can be tailored for unbalanced loads, pleated elements, high-flow service or reverse-direction pressure. The supplier should select and document a construction for the stated duty.

Fabrication details that affect the seal

Drawing item Why it matters
Outside/inside diameter Controls fit, sealing land and forming tooling
Flatness or roundness Affects gasket compression and assembly alignment
Edge treatment Prevents loose wires and defines weld/braze area
Seam type Determines bypass risk and local stiffness
Support core/perforation Influences collapse strength and open flow area
End fittings Defines connection, gasket interface and orientation
Weld acceptance Requires visual, dimensional or leak-test criteria
Marking Links alloy, lot, orientation and drawing revision

If the component is a disc or cut part, start with the mesh disc drawing checklist. For cylindrical elements, the cylinder seam checklist covers overlap and longitudinal seam data.

Qualification samples and inspection

Approve a first article before volume production when the stack, tooling or seam is new. The inspection plan can include material certificates, overall thickness, dimensions, flatness/roundness, visual examination, bubble-point or another agreed pore test, pressure-drop test at a defined fluid and flow, weld or seal integrity, and cleanliness. The actual test method and acceptance limit must be agreed before production.

A sample should be evaluated in the real housing because the element, support, gasket and closure work as a system. A strong laminate can still bypass if the sealing land or end fitting is wrong. Likewise, a correct aperture does not guarantee adequate flow if effective open area is reduced by support plates or welds.

Send an OEM-ready RFQ

Get OEM Pricing by sending a dimensioned drawing, annual quantity, sample requirement, layer schedule, alloy, filtration test basis, flow direction, forward/reverse ΔP, temperature, process fluid, cleaning method and certificate needs. INCE can review manufacturability and return a proposed inspection plan; application performance should be validated with a first article.

FAQ

Is multilayer stainless mesh always sintered?

No. Multilayer assemblies can use different bonding or retention methods. Specify whether a diffusion-bonded sintered laminate or another construction is required.

Which layer should face upstream?

There is no universal answer. The qualified media design and duty determine the order. Mark the upstream face and flow direction on the drawing.

Can mesh count alone define a multilayer filter rating?

No. Wire diameter, weave, layer architecture and the agreed rating test are also needed.
