304 vs 316L Stainless Steel Cartridge Filter Housing: Buyer Checklist

Specify a stainless steel cartridge filter housing using liquid chemistry, cleaning conditions, seals and documentation rather than material grade alone.

A stainless steel cartridge filter housing should be specified from the complete liquid and cleaning conditions. The choice between 304 and a 316L cartridge filter housing affects the wetted construction, but grade alone does not establish suitability, pressure rating or hygienic performance.

Start with liquid and cleaning chemistry

Record the liquid composition, concentration, temperature, pH where relevant, chloride exposure, solids and cleaning chemicals. Include occasional cleaning and shutdown conditions as well as normal operation. Materials must be reviewed against the actual combination of chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure duration.

INCE filtration lists both 304 and 316L options in its Cartridge Filter Housing product range. Request a material recommendation for the intended duty rather than treating either grade as universally compatible.

Compare the complete wetted assembly

Component Information to confirm
Vessel body and lid Specified grade, design conditions and required material traceability
Adapter plate and supports Wetted material, cartridge fit and service access
Nozzles, vent and drain Material and connection standard of every supplied component
Lid gasket and cartridge seals Elastomer grade and compatibility with both liquid and cleaning cycle
Finish and welds Required finish, treatment and agreed inspection documents

When requesting a 316L cartridge filter housing

State whether the material requirement applies to all wetted parts and whether certificates are required. Confirm the material of fittings supplied separately. Describe any corrosion history in the current system and provide photographs where available. A 316L vessel can still be unsuitable if its gasket, weld condition or process exposure does not meet the duty.

Industrial and sanitary requirements are different

“Stainless steel” does not by itself mean sanitary, sterile or compliant with a particular food or pharmaceutical specification. If the project requires a measured surface finish, drainability, cleaning validation, specific seals or certificates, place those requirements on the RFQ. Request written confirmation before purchase.

What to send for material selection and quotation

  • Liquid name, composition and concentration.
  • Normal and maximum operating temperature, plus cleaning cycle details.
  • Operating/design pressure and any vacuum exposure.
  • Flow, cartridge number and length, interface and filtration rating.
  • Wetted material scope, gasket requirements, finish and document list.
  • Quantity, installation constraints and delivery destination.

For the effect of construction choices on a quotation, read the manufacturer and price RFQ guide. For existing vessels, include the nameplate and cleaning history so the replacement proposal can address the actual installation.

FAQ

Does 316L automatically allow higher pressure?

No. The approved pressure rating depends on the complete design, dimensions, closure, temperature and applicable design basis, not simply the grade name.

Can I use the same gasket with a new liquid?

Do not assume compatibility. Review the gasket against the new liquid, concentration, temperature and cleaning chemicals.

Can a housing provide sterile filtration by itself?

No. The cartridge, assembly integrity, installation and validated process requirements must be considered together.
