Nylon Filter Mesh Roll RFQ: Width, Selvage, Splices and Packing

Specify nylon filter mesh rolls by usable width, edge condition, splice policy, roll length, core, winding, inspection, labeling and protective packing.

A nylon filter mesh roll quotation needs more than a micron value and a roll width. The buyer should define the finished aperture and thread construction, usable width, edge condition, splice policy, roll length, winding and packing. Without those fields, two rolls carrying the same nominal description may create different converting yield, setup time and rejection risk.

Start with the filtration construction

Identify the polymer grade or approved material designation, weave, finished mesh opening, thread diameter in both directions where applicable, open area and fabric thickness. A mesh count alone is not a complete filtration specification because the same count can be woven with different thread diameters and therefore different openings and open areas. The Nylon Filter Mesh page provides the commercial product context, while the open-area calculation guide explains the relationship among opening, thread and pitch.

State whether the listed aperture is a target nominal value, a supplier catalog designation or a finished acceptance requirement. If the roll will be washed, heat treated, laminated, sewn or formed after purchase, identify the process and the dimension that must be held after that step. Do not assume an incoming roll value will remain unchanged through every converting operation.

Separate gross width from usable width

“1,000 mm wide” is ambiguous unless the RFQ says whether it means the total fabric width, the inspected usable width or the width remaining after trimming. Define:

RFQ field What to state Why it matters
Usable width Minimum acceptable width available for cutting or processing Controls part yield and nesting
Gross width Overall supplied width, when different from usable width Allows edge allowance and trim planning
Width tolerance Plus/minus or minimum-only acceptance and measurement method Prevents different interpretations at receiving inspection
Edge condition Woven selvage, slit, trimmed or another agreed finish; fraying limit Affects handling and downstream converting
Edge exclusion Width not counted as usable due to selvage, distortion or handling marks Protects the functional cutting area

Photographs and a signed sample are useful when edge appearance matters. Terms such as “clean edge” should be converted into a visible limit, maximum loose-thread condition or agreed reference sample.

Write a splice and defect policy before ordering

Some applications can accept a marked splice outside the cutting pattern; others require an uninterrupted roll. State whether splices are prohibited, limited per roll or permitted only with advance notice. If allowed, define how they are made, marked, protected and counted in invoiced length. Also state the minimum continuous length between a splice and either roll end.

Define the reporting method for holes, broken threads, oil marks, folds, tension bands or distorted areas. A useful roll map records defect type, location from the leading edge and distance from a specified side. The acceptance plan can combine visual inspection, width checks and sampling of aperture/thread data. For conditioned measurements and dimensional stability, use the separate nylon mesh heat-setting and stability RFQ.

Control roll length, core and winding

  • State ordered length, minimum invoiced length and whether partial rolls are acceptable.
  • Define the core material, inside diameter, face length and any maximum roll outside diameter.
  • Identify whether the functional face or warp direction must be wound inward or outward.
  • Set a winding-quality requirement covering telescoping, wrinkles, edge damage and excessive tension.
  • Give the maximum roll mass if warehouse or machine handling imposes a limit.
  • State whether the roll starts with a leader or protective wrap and how the leading edge is identified.

Sefar’s public ribbon and tube pages note that possible width and roll length depend on fabric type and conversion dimensions. Its PA product information identifies PA as polyamide/nylon. These are manufacturer examples confirming that roll format is part of the supplied product; they are not INCE tolerances and should not be copied into an RFQ without agreement.

Packaging and identification

Specify inner wrap, moisture barrier where required, edge protection, end discs, outer carton or crate, pallet orientation and stacking limit. Packaging should prevent crushing, contamination, UV exposure and uncontrolled moisture during the agreed transport route. If controlled conditioning is required before inspection or converting, name the conditioning procedure rather than relying on “dry packed.”

The label and certificate package can include material designation, article or drawing number, aperture/thread construction, width, roll length, lot, roll number, production date, splice count, net/gross mass and inspection record. Define how each physical roll links to its certificate and defect map.

Roll RFQ checklist

  • Polymer grade, weave, aperture, thread diameter, open area and thickness.
  • Usable and gross width, tolerance, edge type and edge exclusion.
  • Ordered length, minimum continuous length, partial-roll rule and splice policy.
  • Core ID/material, winding face/direction, roll OD and mass limits.
  • Defect definitions, roll map, sampling plan and approved sample.
  • Conditioning, cleanliness, packaging, labeling and certificate requirements.
  • Trial quantity, annual demand, converting method and final part dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

Should a nylon filter mesh RFQ specify gross width or usable width?

Specify both when the edge allowance is not part of the functional cutting area. State the minimum usable width, overall supplied width, edge exclusion and measurement method.

Can spliced nylon mesh rolls be accepted?

Only if the application and converting plan permit them. Define whether splices are prohibited or limited, how they are marked, the minimum continuous length and how spliced length is invoiced.

What information should appear on each roll label?

Typical fields include material, mesh construction, width, roll length, lot and roll number, production date, splice count and a link to the inspection certificate or defect map.
