40 vs 60 Inch High Flow Cartridges: Replacement Measurement Checklist

Compare 40- and 60-inch high flow cartridges by exact series, sealing datum, OD/ID, end interface, flow direction, support and removal clearance.

Pall style high flow filter cartridge replacement for industrial filtration

A “40-inch” or “60-inch” label does not prove that a high flow cartridge will fit an existing housing. The buyer must identify the exact cartridge series and measure from the correct sealing datum. Outside diameter, open-end geometry, inside connection, closed-end support, flow direction and removal clearance can differ even when two products share a nominal length.

The image is a representative Pall-style high flow replacement cartridge. It does not prove compatibility with a specific Pall, Parker, 3M or third-party housing.

Nominal length is a family code, not a complete drawing

Official manufacturer data illustrate the problem. 3M’s HF/HFM specification lists nominal 40- and 60-inch cartridges within its own system. Pall publishes Ultipleat High Flow cartridges with a nominal 6-inch diameter and series-specific construction. Parker’s ParMax Select data lists nominal 20-, 40- and 60-inch elements, a 6-inch outside diameter and a series-specific inlet and seal configuration. These figures describe those named families; they are not universal dimensions for every “high flow” cartridge.

Series reference Published dimensional clue What the buyer must still confirm
3M HF/HFM Nominal 40/60-inch options in the manufacturer specification Exact model, series, overall and sealing dimensions, flow direction and housing drawing
Pall Ultipleat High Flow Nominal 6-inch diameter, coreless single-open-end family; 40/60-inch products exist Part number, seal code, end interface, length datum, media and support requirements
Parker ParMax Select Nominal 6-inch OD with 20/40/60-inch codes in its own data sheet Exact end configuration, inlet/orifice, seal material, rating and vessel interface

Do not use this table as a cross-reference. The same nominal OD and length do not establish interchangeability, performance or certification.

Measure from functional datums

  1. Overall length: photograph the tape or caliper placement and state whether end features are included.
  2. Sealing datum to closed end: this often matters more than a rough overall length.
  3. Outside diameter: measure away from labels or deformation and record more than one location.
  4. Open-end interface: record bore/orifice, connector or adapter geometry, groove and shoulder dimensions.
  5. Closed end: photograph the cap, support feature and any locating recess or handle.
  6. Seal: state profile, dimensions, material, number of seals and installed location.
  7. Internal support: note whether the element is coreless and how the housing supports it.

If the used element is distorted or swollen, separate “as removed” measurements from the original supplier drawing. An incumbent sample helps, but the approved drawing and model code remain the stronger basis.

Confirm flow direction and vessel internals

Flow direction affects which surface receives contaminants and how the housing distributes flow. It must be checked by exact series, not guessed from nozzle location. Use the high flow cartridge flow-direction guide for the documented differences among named families.

Also photograph the housing tube sheet, standpipe or adapter, hold-down device and closed-end support. The seal and end-cap compatibility checklist explains the separate interface data. A replacement can match the visible cartridge length yet fail to seat because its datum or internal support differs.

Plan removal clearance before changing length

A 60-inch cartridge needs more extraction space than a 40-inch cartridge, but the required service envelope is not simply the nominal length difference. Cover movement, lifting method, cartridge wet mass, platform height, overhead piping and the angle of removal all matter. Obtain an approved high-flow housing arrangement drawing before changing length or orientation.

Do not assume that a longer cartridge can be installed in a shorter vessel with an adapter, or that fewer longer cartridges will automatically produce the same flow. The supplier must check housing geometry, cartridge quantity, media pressure loss, contaminant loading and distribution.

Send your specification for review

Send the complete incumbent model, label and end photographs, housing drawing, cartridge quantity, functional measurements, flow direction, fluid data and required documents. INCE can review a 40- or 60-inch replacement without treating nominal length as proof of fit.

Frequently asked questions

Will any 60-inch high flow cartridge fit a 60-inch housing?

No. Nominal length is only one identifier. Confirm the exact series, sealing datum, OD/ID, end interface, seal, flow direction and housing support geometry.

Can a 40-inch cartridge be replaced by a 60-inch cartridge to reduce element count?

Not without a new housing and system review. Vessel length, internal supports, extraction space, flow distribution, pressure loss and solids loading must all be checked.

What photographs are needed for a replacement quote?

Provide the full label, open end, closed end, seal, housing tube sheet or adapter, hold-down and support features, plus measurements photographed against defined datums.
