High Flow Filter Cartridge Flow Direction: Inside-Out vs Outside-In

Check high flow cartridge flow direction by exact series and housing flow path. Compare HF/HFM, HFR, Ultipleat and ParMax Select references before ordering.

Pall style high flow filter cartridge replacement for industrial filtration

High flow filter cartridges do not all use the same flow direction. Inside-to-outside and outside-to-inside are distinct arrangements, and a brand name or nominal length is not enough to identify the correct replacement. Before ordering from the high flow cartridge range, match the complete element reference to the housing’s documented dirty-side and clean-side flow path.

What inside-out and outside-in describe

Inside-to-outside means liquid passes from the element’s interior through its filtration structure toward the outside. Outside-to-inside describes the reverse path through the element. These terms concern the cartridge, not simply whether the vessel has a side inlet, top inlet or horizontal installation.

The housing’s internal routing determines where incoming liquid reaches the element and where filtered liquid is collected. Ask for a flow drawing or the relevant manufacturer instructions when that route is unclear. Do not infer the correct direction from the position of the two external pipe connections.

Published examples show why the exact series matters

Identified reference Published flow direction Purchasing implication
3M High Flow HF/HFM Outside-to-inside Do not treat HF/HFM and HFR as one interface solely because both carry the High Flow description
3M High Flow HFR retrofit series Inside-to-outside Identify the retrofit series and complete part reference
Pall Ultipleat High Flow Inside-to-outside Match the particular element and housing documentation
Parker Fulflo ParMax Select Inside-out Do not extend this statement to every Parker cartridge family

These are examples from the named manufacturers’ literature, not a cross-brand interchangeability table. In particular, 3M describes HF/HFM with an outside-to-inside path, whereas its HFR retrofit literature specifies inside-to-outside flow. Pall describes the Ultipleat High Flow element as inside-to-outside, and Parker’s ParMax Select data sheet identifies inside-out flow. Other models and later revisions must be checked individually.

Shared direction establishes only one necessary interface characteristic. It does not establish identical dimensions, seals, filtration performance, pressure limits or approval for a particular liquid. INCE replacement-style products are alternatives requiring confirmation, not original Pall, Parker or 3M products or products endorsed by those brands.

Read the element and vessel as a matched assembly

Retain the installed element’s full label and housing nameplate reference. Request the housing arrangement, element seat details and correct flow diagram. Record the confirmed flow direction in the replacement specification alongside the element dimensions and seal details, rather than leaving it as an informal message between buyer and salesperson.

Use the seal and end-cap guide for the remaining mechanical interfaces. For a new installation, specify the high flow housing and cartridge together. A matching overall length or approximately similar diameter does not verify the complete hydraulic or sealing arrangement.

Confirm which differential-pressure data apply

Ask the proposed cartridge supplier to identify the permitted forward differential pressure at the intended temperature and the change-out recommendation for the offered construction. If reverse pressure or a reverse-flow event is possible, disclose that condition and request an explicit assessment. Do not assume the forward rating applies in reverse.

Likewise, do not describe a disposable high flow element as backwashable simply because it can be physically exposed to liquid from the other side. Any reverse-flow or cleaning capability requires product-specific evidence. This article provides no procedure for reversing piping, operating a vessel or testing a pressure assembly.

Resolve uncertain identification before buying a batch

If the existing cartridge label is missing, mark the direction as unconfirmed. Collect available drawings, equipment records and clear photographs of both ends and the holder, with the equipment in a safe condition under the site’s procedures. Have the responsible equipment engineer confirm the flow path; guessing from pleat appearance is not an acceptance method.

For a proposed alternative, request a written deviation list and an approved comparison drawing. Agree dimensional checks, suitable qualification evidence and any site trial before bulk release. Keep the accepted supplier part code and revision on repeat orders so a familiar brand-style description does not conceal a construction change.

Send the series and housing reference for review

Provide the complete existing element code, housing reference, documented flow direction, end photographs, dimensions, liquid, temperature, flow, pressure conditions and quantity. Ask INCE to confirm the proposed direction and interface in writing, and list any information still needed for qualification.

Frequently asked questions

Are 3M HF/HFM and HFR the same flow direction?

No. The cited HF/HFM literature describes outside-to-inside flow, while HFR retrofit literature describes inside-to-outside flow. Confirm the complete model and revision.

Does a shared flow direction prove cross-brand interchangeability?

No. Dimensions, seals, housing routing, operating limits and performance requirements still need confirmation.

Can an inside-out cartridge be backwashed automatically?

Do not assume so. A reverse-flow or cleaning duty requires explicit product-specific approval and evidence.
