Bag Filter Housing Restrainer Basket: Perforation and Fit Checklist

Specify a bag filter housing restrainer basket by fit, perforation, open area, material, welds, bottom support, hold-down interface and inspection data.

Size 1 and Size 2 industrial single bag filter housing

The restrainer basket supports a flexible filter bag; it should not be treated as the filtration rating by default. A replacement basket must fit the housing, support the bag as differential pressure rises, preserve adequate flow area and align with the collar or hold-down system. Hole diameter alone is not a complete purchase specification.

The image shows representative single-bag housings. It does not establish the basket perforation, strength or compatibility for a specific model.

Separate support duty from straining duty

In a normal bag-filter configuration, the bag media provides the stated particle-retention duty while the perforated basket restrains it. Some housings can also use a mesh-lined strainer in place of a bag. Eaton’s housing-accessory guide explicitly lists mesh strainers as an alternative conversion and identifies separate hold-down rings that keep the bag secure in the restrainer basket. Therefore an RFQ must say whether the part is a bag-support basket, a strainer element or a combined assembly.

Perforation and open area are different fields

A perforated sheet is defined by hole size, hole pattern, pitch, sheet thickness and resulting open area. Eaton’s published basket/screen tables show that different hole patterns can produce materially different percentages of open area even where holes look similar. Those values belong to the named Eaton strainer products and should not be copied into another basket design. They demonstrate why “3 mm perforation” is incomplete.

RFQ field What to specify Inspection evidence
Housing interface Housing model, basket seating diameter, rim thickness, shoulder and orientation Drawing or incumbent sample fit check
Bag fit Bag size, collar/ring type, installed diameter/length and hold-down arrangement Assembly photograph or gauge/sample trial
Perforation Hole diameter/shape, staggered or straight pattern and pitch Pattern drawing and sampled dimensions
Open area Required minimum or design target, with calculation basis Supplier calculation from actual pattern
Structure Material, sheet thickness, seam, welds, bottom plate and reinforcement Material record and visual/dimensional inspection
Finish Edge condition, burr limit, cleaning, passivation or other treatment if required Agreed process and acceptance record

Fit is more than OD and length

Record the basket OD at several locations, overall length, rim/seat dimensions, bottom shape, handle or lifting feature, and the position of any locating tabs. The bag’s ring or molded collar must seat correctly at the housing interface. A basket that is slightly long, short or proud at the rim can interfere with sealing or prevent the cover from closing as designed.

Use the filter bag ring and collar fit guide to document the bag side of the interface. Do not grind, bend or remove a basket feature in the field without approval from the housing manufacturer or responsible engineer.

Inspect welds and edges where they contact the bag

Sharp burrs, protruding wire or an uneven longitudinal seam can damage a flexible bag during installation or loading. State the acceptance criteria for the inside surface, perforated edges, seam, rim and bottom transition. If the design uses a separate mesh lining, specify its aperture, wire, attachment and edge treatment independently from the perforated support.

The basket must be evaluated for the actual differential load, material, temperature and corrosion environment by the responsible designer. Open-area calculations alone do not establish mechanical strength. Conversely, adding unreviewed reinforcement can obstruct flow or create bag-contact points.

Single and multi-bag replacement data

For a single-bag housing, send one complete basket drawing or an undamaged sample and the housing closure details. For a multi-bag housing, also identify basket position, tube-sheet opening, interchangeability requirement and whether all baskets must be replaced as a matched set.

Include operating and design conditions using the housing pressure data-sheet checklist. Basket support requirements cannot be reviewed from bag size alone.

Incoming inspection plan

  1. Material and heat/lot identification where contracted.
  2. OD, length, rim/seat, bottom and handle dimensions.
  3. Perforation diameter, pattern, pitch and calculated open area.
  4. Sheet thickness, seam and reinforcement dimensions.
  5. Weld continuity and agreed visual acceptance.
  6. Burrs, sharp edges, loose wire and bag-contact surfaces.
  7. Fit with housing gauge, approved basket or bag/collar sample.
  8. Cleaning, surface treatment, labeling and protective packing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the basket hole size define the filter micron rating?

Usually the bag media provides the filtration rating and the perforated basket provides support. If the assembly is used as a strainer, specify the mesh or perforation duty separately.

Why is open area needed in addition to perforation diameter?

Open area also depends on hole pattern and pitch. Two sheets with similar hole diameters can have different flow area and structural behavior.

What is needed to quote a replacement restrainer basket?

Provide the housing model, basket drawing or sample, rim/seat and bottom details, bag collar, perforation pattern, material, thickness, welds, operating conditions, inspection and quantity.
