Sugar Syrup Filtration: Coarse Bags vs Clarification Stages

Separate coarse sugar syrup bag filtration from clarification and microbial-control duties. Send concentration, viscosity, temperature and solids data for RFQ.

industrial liquid filter bags for process filtration

Specify the filtration stage before choosing a sugar syrup filter bag. Removing coarse insoluble material after dissolving sugar is a different task from achieving a final clarity target or a validated microbiological result. A bag selected for coarse straining should not be presented as replacing every downstream stage. Begin by describing the required duty, then evaluate the appropriate medium, housing and qualification evidence.

Separate three purchasing questions

Ask what is to be removed, where the filter sits and how success will be measured. Eaton’s sugar syrup application brief identifies coarse bag filtration as an option upstream of particle filtration when coarse or insoluble material is present. Its separate syrup case study describes a plant using stacked-disc depth filtration for a different quality objective. These examples support separating duties; they are not evidence that an INCE bag achieves the named manufacturer’s results.

Required stage or outcome Information to provide What not to assume
Coarse straining Observed insoluble debris, particle information and downstream protection objective Any coarse bag is a final clarification filter
Clarification or polishing Defined appearance or analytical endpoint and representative feed A smaller micron label alone guarantees the endpoint
Microbiological control The responsible site’s validated process requirements A 75 or 250 micron bag establishes microbial safety or sterility

Identify any existing downstream depth, membrane or other treatment stage and ask what feed condition it requires. Do not use “clear,” “polished” and “sterile” interchangeably in a quotation. A visually acceptable sample is not proof of a microbiological result, and this article does not specify a food-safety process.

Describe the syrup at filtration conditions

Provide sugar concentration, using Brix where that is your plant’s reporting basis, as well as temperature and viscosity at the proposed filtration point. Report the actual formulation and any additional ingredients. Distinguish the warm steady-running condition from startup, holding and other conditions the proposed equipment will experience.

For a batch process, specify both total batch volume and required transfer time. As an illustrative arithmetic check, transferring 12 m³ in 2 hours requires a 6 m³/h average transfer rate. That is not a bag or housing capacity rating: available pressure, viscosity, loading, downtime and the required quality result still need assessment. Do not quote water-service flow as a confirmed syrup duty.

Choose the bag construction against the defined stage

PP felt bags and nylon mesh bags are different constructions. Ask the supplier to identify the proposed material, retention or opening basis, seams, collar and evidence for the intended liquid and temperature. Do not select between them using the sugar application name alone.

If a preliminary inquiry mentions 75 or 250 micron, clarify what problem those numbers are intended to solve. They are candidate specifications to be justified by the duty, not universal syrup recommendations. Specify whether the number describes a felt rating or a mesh opening and review the downstream result during qualification.

If neither candidate meets the clarification objective, consider a different filtration stage rather than repeatedly reducing a coarse bag’s nominal rating. Purchasing the wrong stage can create change-out work without resolving the quality requirement.

Review the complete wetted assembly and documentation

Material review includes the bag, collar, seams or other construction components, vessel and seals. Ask for evidence relevant to the actual supplied item, intended contact conditions and destination market. A polymer name, stainless steel grade or generic “food grade” description is not a complete release record.

Cleaning exposure must be identified separately from normal syrup contact. Provide the site’s cleaning chemicals, concentrations, temperatures and exposure conditions for supplier review. Do not assume a bag can remain installed during a cleaning cycle, tolerate steam or be reused merely because the vessel is designed for that process. Follow the approved equipment and hygiene procedures.

Evaluate loading, product loss and the service arrangement

For a single bag or multi bag housing proposal, request an assessment at the stated viscosity and operating conditions. Ask how manual service, residual syrup collection and production interruptions are included in the proposal. More bags do not by themselves establish an economical operating plan.

Agree a representative trial with production and quality personnel: record feed condition, flow, pressure observations, filtrate result, processed quantity and reasons for ending the run. Record product loss and operator workload where relevant. Use these measured results to compare candidates, not another plant’s throughput, regeneration history or advertised service life.

Request a stage-specific syrup filtration review

Send the process stage, formulation and concentration, filtration temperature and viscosity, solids concern, batch volume, transfer time, available pressure, quality target, cleaning exposure and quantity. Ask INCE to confirm whether a bag-stage proposal is appropriate and what evidence or trial is required.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 75 or 250 micron bag a universal syrup filter?

No. Select the construction and rating against the actual solids-removal duty and agreed downstream result.

Does coarse bag filtration replace final clarification or microbial control?

Do not assume so. Define and qualify each required stage with the responsible process and quality team.

Can a water flow rating be used directly for sugar syrup?

No. Assess the proposed assembly at the syrup’s actual viscosity, temperature, loading and available pressure.
