Cooling Tower Side Stream Filtration: Bags or Cartridges?

Compare bag, cartridge and automatic cooling tower side stream filtration using solids data, selected flow, maintenance demand and a defined operating trial.

high flow cartridge filter housing for industrial liquid filtration

For cooling tower side stream filtration, choose the maintenance strategy and solids-removal duty before choosing a bag or cartridge grade. A consumable filter can be a candidate, but frequent loading or limited operator access may make an automatically cleaned technology more appropriate.

The U.S. Department of Energy describes side stream filtration as filtering a portion of the recirculating water, not necessarily the entire circulation flow. Its guidance also makes clear that filtration does not replace the water-treatment program. The right proposal must fit the actual tower, water quality and operating constraints.

Separate side stream flow from total circulation

Report total circulation, system water inventory and the proposed side stream flow as different inputs. Also identify where water is withdrawn and returned, what pressure is available and whether a dedicated pump is part of the project.

A simple arithmetic check is nominal inventory turnover time = water inventory ÷ side stream flow. For an illustrative 100 m³ inventory and 25 m³/h side stream, the result is 4 hours. It is not a guaranteed cleanup time: mixing, solids generation, capture efficiency and sampling location remain important. Do not select the flow solely from this calculation or an unexplained fixed percentage.

Characterize the solids before selecting microns

DOE identifies particle-size distribution and total suspended solids as useful selection information. Provide representative samples or test results and describe changes with weather, makeup water and plant operation. Identify whether the concern is heavy grit, fine suspended material or another observed contaminant rather than describing all loading as “dirt.”

A 75 or 250 micron bag is not a universal cooling tower recommendation. Request the required particle-removal result and rating basis. A coarse straining duty and a fine suspended-solids duty can justify different technologies and consumable constructions.

Candidate When to evaluate it Main purchasing question
Single or multi bag arrangement Defined trial or duty with a manageable change-out workload Can operators maintain the accepted flow and cleanliness economically?
Cartridge arrangement A specified retention requirement supported by suitable element data What are actual loading behavior, replacement cost and interface requirements?
Automatically cleaned filter Continuous solids loading or limited manual-service capacity What cleaning, discharge, controls and utility requirements apply?

Do not omit automatic alternatives from the comparison

Xylem’s technology review includes bag and cartridge microfilters alongside separators, media filters and automatic screens, emphasizing application and operating requirements. DOE’s longer technology overview highlights the maintenance implications of systems without automatic backwash. These are reasons to compare a complete operating proposal, not to assume the cheapest vessel will have the lowest running cost.

For bag candidates, review single bag housings, multi bag housings and the required PP bag or nylon mesh bag construction. For cartridge candidates, review high flow cartridges with the matching housing. Consider self-cleaning housing options where their documented operating conditions match the proposed duty.

Compare the service plan, not only the purchase price

Ask each bidder to identify required operator actions, isolation or standby arrangements, consumables, waste handling, cleaning discharge and utilities. Obtain the expected maintenance assumptions in writing and label estimates as estimates. A bag and a cartridge should not be compared using unverified service-life claims or different water conditions.

For an existing Pall, Parker or 3M-style high-flow installation, identify the complete current element and housing reference before evaluating an alternative. Confirm mechanical fit and water-chemistry suitability separately from the tower’s solids-removal objective.

Agree trial endpoints with the water-treatment team

Define the trial’s flow, sampling locations, water-quality measures, pressure observations, maintenance logging and review interval. Assess actual element loading and service workload alongside the agreed downstream result. A clear initial sample or low clean pressure drop does not establish long-term performance.

Keep chemical-treatment settings and any operational changes under the responsible site’s approved management process. Do not promise a reduction in blowdown, chemical use, energy or water consumption without a documented baseline and a plant-specific assessment.

Send a cooling tower side stream duty for review

Provide water inventory, circulation and proposed side stream flow, solids data, water chemistry, temperature, available pressure, operating hours and maintenance constraints. Ask INCE to identify a suitable filtration candidate and the evidence or trial required, rather than quoting a generic micron grade.

Frequently asked questions

Should a side stream filter handle the full circulation flow?

Not by definition. Establish the selected side stream duty and its hydraulic arrangement separately from total circulation, with the responsible system designer.

Are bags or cartridges always the best option?

No. Compare the required retention, actual loading and manual-service demand with automatically cleaned and other appropriate filtration technologies.

Does side stream filtration replace chemical water treatment?

No. Coordinate filtration with the site’s water-treatment program and evaluate the plant-specific operating requirements.
