Choosing a 5 Micron PP Filter Cartridge

For RO pretreatment, use the membrane supplier’s required prefilter performance and the feed-water analysis to confirm suitability. The micron label is not a universal RO approval.

A micron rating describes a filtration grade, not a guaranteed percentage removal. Confirm whether the selected cartridge is nominally or absolutely rated, the test method and retention efficiency at the required particle size.

Depth media captures particles through a fibrous structure rather than through a single woven aperture. Actual performance depends on media construction, liquid viscosity, flow, particle distribution and cartridge loading. This cartridge is intended for suspended particles; it is not a desalination or dissolved-contaminant treatment stage.

5 Micron Cartridge Specifications

Listed construction options are based on the INCE melt blown cartridge series specifications. Confirm availability of the complete combination before ordering.

ItemSpecification / selection requirement
Filtration rating5 µm; efficiency and test method to be confirmed
Filter media / structurePP polypropylene; three-layer graded depth media
Nominal lengths10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 inch; confirm actual sealing length
Diameter options63 / 115 mm OD; 28 / 30 mm ID; confirm the selected pairing
Core / end capsPP or stainless steel center core options; PP end caps
SealsSilicone, EPDM, NBR or Viton options; compatibility review required
AssemblyHot-melt-welded connections without adhesive
Series temperature limitListed maximum 70°C; confirm configuration and liquid suitability
Series differential-pressure limitListed maximum 2.0 bar at 21°C; this is not a housing pressure rating
Change-out differential pressureRequest a confirmed limit for the ordered cartridge. Do not exceed the applicable cartridge or housing limit.
Flow rateRequest the 5 µm pressure-drop curve for the selected length and diameter

Temperature and pressure limits are not a guarantee of simultaneous operation at both maxima. Sanitization or steam use requires a separately approved configuration and operating procedure; a stainless steel insert alone does not establish steam compatibility.

5 vs 10 micron: Selection Comparison

Consider 5 micron for a finer stated filtration target and 10 micron for an upstream stage where that target is sufficient. Verify pressure drop at the actual flow.

Current rating

Compare like-for-like dimensions and test conditions. A finer stated rating does not provide a fixed service-life, efficiency or flow-rate ratio.

Dimensions, End Caps and Sealing

Match the housing

Provide a dimensional drawing or an existing cartridge sample. Check actual length, OD, ID, support and sealing faces rather than relying only on the nominal inch size.

Select the interface

The series lists flat, 215, 222, high 222 and 226 connections, with tip and cover options. Confirm the adapter and opposite-end arrangement as a complete assembly.

Review chemical compatibility

Specify the liquid, concentration and temperature. PP media, center core and gasket compatibility must all be checked for the proposed process.

Applications to Evaluate

Water treatment

Evaluate suspended-solids removal and staged prefiltration using feed-water analysis. RO pretreatment requires the membrane supplier’s specified particle-removal performance.

Process liquids

Consider compatible chemical and industrial liquid clarification. Select the rating against the actual downstream requirement and verify flow at process viscosity.

Documented production processes

Food, beverage and other controlled processes require application-specific material declarations and qualification. Request the documents for the exact supplied configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a 5 micron melt blown filter cartridge mean?

A 5 micron melt blown filter cartridge is a PP depth-filter option for suspended-particle control in water treatment and compatible process liquids. It sits between 3 and 10 micron in this series. The stated micron rating must be paired with a retention efficiency and test method; it is not automatically an absolute rating.

5 vs 10 micron: which should I choose?

Consider 5 micron for a finer stated filtration target and 10 micron for an upstream stage where that target is sufficient. Verify pressure drop at the actual flow.

Which cartridge lengths and diameters are available?

The series lists 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 inch nominal lengths, 63 or 115 mm outside diameters and 28 or 30 mm inside diameters. Confirm the exact combination and dimensional drawing for the selected rating.

Can I use this PP cartridge in my existing housing?

Confirm actual length, OD, ID, end interfaces, sealing arrangement and gasket material against the housing drawing. A matching micron rating or nominal length alone does not establish compatibility.

Is this cartridge suitable for RO, food or pharmaceutical filtration?

Suitability depends on liquid compatibility, required retention, operating conditions and application-specific documentation. Ask for relevant material declarations and validation; the cartridge is not presented as a sterilizing-grade filter.

When should the cartridge be replaced?

Use an approved change-out differential pressure below the applicable cartridge and housing limits, or replace earlier if process quality or flow requires it. Obtain a confirmed threshold for the ordered configuration.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Send the micron rating, dimensions, end-cap drawing or sample, core and gasket requirements, liquid, flow rate, temperature, operating pressure, solids loading, quantity and required documentation.
