PP vs PE Filter Bags: Confirming Materials Before Selection

PE may mean polyethylene or a supplier code for polyester. Learn how to clarify PP vs PE filter bag specifications before comparing materials or ordering.

Before comparing PP vs PE filter bags, confirm what PE means on the quotation. In polymer terminology, PE commonly means polyethylene. In some filter bag ordering systems, however, PE is used as a product code for polyester. These are different materials, so the abbreviation must be clarified before making a selection.

Why a two-letter code is not enough

A supplier’s ordering code is not necessarily a standardized polymer abbreviation. Filtteck’s extended-life bag literature, for example, lists PO for polypropylene and PE for polyester in its ordering information. That is evidence for that particular coding system, not permission to interpret every supplier’s PE the same way. See the manufacturer’s ordering-code example.

The practical result is simple: write the full material name on the purchase specification. Retain the supplier code as a separate identifier. If a database groups PE with polyethylene, check that mapping against the actual products rather than repeating it in technical copy.

If PE means polyester

Compare the specified polypropylene and polyester products using their own technical data. Request compatibility evidence for the liquid and cleaning process, retention data, pressure-drop information and complete assembly limits. Do not compare a polypropylene felt bag with a polyester mesh bag as though material is the only variable.

Ask whether the ring and seam construction are identical between the candidates. If several design features change, record them separately. The outcome of a trial then describes the tested products rather than proving that one polymer is universally better.

If PE means polyethylene

Keep it as a separate material requirement. Ask the supplier to identify the polyethylene media construction, the offered ratings and supporting data. Do not substitute polyester because another supplier uses PE as its polyester code, and do not infer that a listed keyword establishes commercial availability.

Where no documented product meets the intended requirement, ask for a technically justified alternative with its differences stated. A substitute should go through the same fit, compatibility and performance review as any new filter.

A purchase specification that prevents confusion

Use a description such as “polypropylene felt media, manufacturer part number [confirmed number], approved ring drawing, defined retention requirement and operating conditions.” Replace every bracketed item with the actual agreed information in the purchase order; it is not sufficient to write “same as PE bag.”

A useful supplier clarification request is: “Please state the full media polymer, ring material, seam method, micron-rating definition and drawing revision. Explain what PE represents in your product code.” Keep the written answer with the approved sample and trial record.

Choose using the confirmed material

Continue with the material comparison guide and selection checklist. Browse liquid filter bag options using full material names whenever possible.

Resolve the abbreviation first

A PP vs PE filter bag comparison starts by writing the full polymer names. If PE is a supplier’s polyester code, it must not be treated as a polyethylene specification.

Align the two products

For a PP vs PE filter bag inquiry, compare media structure, ring and seam as separate fields. Do not attribute every observed difference to the base polymer when several features changed together.

Keep the decision traceable

Close the PP vs PE filter bag review with the confirmed material descriptions, relevant product data and application result. Retain supplier codes only alongside their documented meaning.

Frequently asked questions

Does PE always mean polyester in filtration?

No. Its meaning depends on the supplier and context. Get the full name in writing.

Is polypropylene always coded PP?

Do not assume so. Manufacturer codes can differ; the complete material description and product documentation are the purchasing reference.
